Effect of poultry manure on the growth and yield parameters of mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) genotypes in Awka alfisols, Southeastern Nigeria

This experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Agricultural Farm of the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State Nigeria in April-August 2019; to determine the effect of poultry manure on the yield of five Mung beans (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) varieties. Poultry manure rates of 0 and 10 tonnes/ha and 5 varieties of Mung beans Tropical Vigna radiata (Tvr 6); Tropical Vigna radiata (Tvr 12); Tropical Vigna radiata (Tvr 14); Tropical Vigna radiata (Tvr 15) and Tropical Vigna radiata (Tvr 29) were evaluated. The study was carried out as a 2 x 5 factorial experiment with 10 treatment combinations laid out in a complete randomized design (CRD) experiment with 3 replications. Treatment means were separated using the least significant difference (LSD=0.05). Data was taken from the following parameters: days to 50% germination, plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, leaf area, days to 50% flowering, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod and number of nodules per pot. The results showed that the tallest plants, highest number of leaves, pods per plant, pod length, and seed per pods were recorded with the application of 10 tonnes per hectare of poultry manure. Tvr 15 had the tallest plants height for the experiment, while Tvr 29 gave the highest number of leaves and branches. Tvr 6 and Tvr 15 had the highest leaf area. Based on this study, the highest yield was obtained with the application of poultry manure at 10 tonnes/ha + using Tvr 12 mung bean variety.
