Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of aqueous extract of Nigella sativa (black seed) on experimental type-2 diabetes produced by streptozotocin intensified with high-fat diet in Wistar rats

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder with a high global prevalence and is associated with lipid profile abnormalities and obesity. This study evaluated the Hypoglycemic and Hypolipidemic effect of aqueous extract of Nigella sativa on experimental type-2 diabetes produced by streptozotocin intensified with high-fat diet in Wistar rats. A total of thirty (30) Wistar rats of different sex were divided into five groups (n=6). Group 1 were normoglycemic rats while groups 2 to group 5 were diabetic groups induced by high fat diet and single intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (30 mg/kg). Group 2 served as negative control induced with diabetis but did not receive any treatment while Group 3 received metformin orally (150 mg/kg) while group 4 and group 5 received an aqueous extract of Nigella sativa (100 mg/kg) and (200mg /kg) respectively. Metformin and the extract were administered daily via oral route for a period of 18 days.. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test  compared means across and between groups respectively. Administration of metformin 150 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of the extract significantly reduced blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol levels when compared to the negative controls. Furthermore, as regards to the body weight there was no significant difference when compared to the negative controls. In conclusion, Nigella sativa decreased hyperglycemia and dyslipideamia in high fat diet and Streptozotocin-intensified diabetic Wistar rats.
